Weekly Update: 3/18/2015

This week we have the first of our monthly seminars on Thursday evening. This month’s topic is (Seminar #1) “Understanding the Psychological Impact of War-Zone Exposure and Coming Home” which explores military sexual trauma, PTSD, Traumatic Brain Injury and moral injury and relation to suicide prevention. These seminars are free and open to the public.

Doors will be open at 5:45 PM. Dinner is being provided by Fargiano’s of East Islip, and there will be soda, water coffee and snacks available. Anyone wishing to bring any baked goods or anything feel free to. This is a monthly event held every third Thursday of each month. Please RSVP so seating and food is properly coordinated –

Saturday we have our monthly food and personal care items collection drive. We also collect items for care packages. This is a monthly event held every third Saturday of each month. Hours are from 0930-1500 hrs.

We are also looking for the addresses of more Troops, stationed overseas or stateside as we have plenty of supplies to ship out to them. Currently we have more supplies then funds and are looking for sponsors of care packages. You can donate at

You can also stop down Saturday morning and drop off sponsorship donation or cards & notes that we can include in this month’s shipping.

The VAC maintains a food and personal care pantry that is available to Veterans during programs and group times. We can also make other arrangements if needed.

Currently we are suspending our Furniture pantry program for a short time as we work on obtaining more storage and possibly a truck / van to deliver and pull the trailer.

The winter snow caused a mess at the VAC with the roof leaking into the space. We would like to thank Kamco of Syosset, Home Depot of Shirley and the Cafici Family for providing materials and funds along with all of the Volunteers that spent the time rebuilding, painting, patching ceilings and doing general clean up to get the VAC looking better than it ever has.

Please don’t forget about the 4th Annual Robert Cafici PTSD Awareness event on Sunday April 26th at the Main Event in Farmingdale. Every year this turns in a better time. Hours are from 1330-1800 hrs. Live music by “Mixed Bag”. Please visit our website for more info or to purchase tickets. For more info go to or

We are also still looking for sponsors for our 6th Annual “Run to the VA” in memory Of SSgt John Andrew Thorburn, a Vietnam Veteran who coped and suffered with symptoms of Agent Orange which also deeply affected his family taking the lives of two of his children. This event is not only a Memorial Run, and an Agent Orange Awareness Event, but also a bonding experience with Veterans that reside at the Nursing Home (Bldg. 92) at the Northport VA medical center on this Father’s Day weekend. The day starts off at the VAC with breakfast, Our Nations Pledge & Anthem, Prayer and then a Moment of Silence. Then invited speakers talk of Agent Orange, this is followed by a road trip to Calverton National Cemetery where we pay our respects to SSgt John Andrew Thorburn. We then travel to the Northport VA and serve up a BBQ & live music and then enjoy the afternoon with the Veterans that now live at the VA. This is a free event, but we are looking for sponsors which allows us to purchase t-shirts which are given free to the residing Veterans and also the cost of food & beverages for the BBQ which feeds hospitalized Veterans, VA Staff and all the attendees. For sponsorship info please go to
