Weekly VAC, Programs, Groups & Events Update 4/3/2015

We would like to thank all of the Volunteers that assisted us on Saturday 3/21 and 3/28, not only were we able to get many chores around the VAC accomplished but we also were able to pack, label and address over 200 Care Packages that are now on their way to Troops in Iraq, Korea, and Afghanistan.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to all those that made financial donations so we could get them in the mail also.

Also Thank you to all those that dropped off food donations for the pantry. Please don’t forget that every third Saturday is our Food collection drop off at the VAC from 0930 -1430 hrs. . We also collect on this day not only food, but personal care products, sock/t-shirts (new) and items for care packages.

Thank you also to the William Floyd NJROTC who worked with Wendy’s of Shirley and raised over $600 for our care package program.

We will not be having any Volunteer work this Saturday within the VAC (4/4), but do require assistance this weekend with our furniture program if you can assist please email us. (

We will soon be turning Monday nights into a caregiver group more for the support of family members. This group will start with a seminar and workshop in mid-May. This group will be open to the public but geared towards family members of Veterans.

On April 16th we will have our monthly public seminar. These seminars are available at no cost to the public, if you’re a military family, or deal with military or Veterans, please try to attend, Seminar starts at 7:00 pm, doors open 6pm, and we’ll have dinner available. This month the topic is:

“Addressing Moral Injury to Prevent Military Suicide” focuses on unspoken spiritual impact of performing duties that may be in conflict with deeply held beliefs. Presentation includes specific Veteran warning signs and strategies to assist. All welcome to attend, were just looking for RSVP’s so we have seating and refreshments properly prepared. We had a nice turnout for March’s program.

We are also looking for the addresses of more Troops, stationed overseas or stateside as we have plenty of supplies to ship out to them. Currently we have more supplies then funds and are looking for sponsors of care packages. You can donate at

Last month’s packing of over 260 packages has our Military Care Package account down to an almost $0 balance. For us to ship again we must get this account back up to 2000-3000$ dollars to ship a good amount. Please consider doing a fundraiser, collection or sponsoring yourself. You can donate to this cause at . We can also ship packages to any address of Military Service Members you provide to us at .

We are not in need at this time supplies for care packages as we already also have a good amount of supplies in stock for when we can ship next.

The VAC maintains a food and personal care pantry that is available to Veterans during programs and group times. We can also make other arrangements if needed. You may donate supplies to these pantries on the third Saturday of each month.

Please don’t forget about the 4th Annual Robert Cafici PTSD Awareness event on Sunday April 26th at the Main Event in Farmingdale. Every year this turns in a better time. Hours are from 1330-1800 hrs. Live music by “Mixed Bag”. Please visit our website for more info or to purchase tickets. For more info go to or

We are also still looking for sponsors for our 6th Annual “Run to the VA” in memory Of SSgt John Andrew Thorburn, a Vietnam Veteran who coped and suffered with symptoms of Agent Orange which also deeply affected his family taking the lives of two of his children. This event is not only a Memorial Run, and an Agent Orange Awareness Event, but also a bonding experience with Veterans that reside at the Nursing Home (Bldg. 92) at the Northport VA medical center on this Father’s Day weekend. The day starts off at the VAC with breakfast, Our Nations Pledge & Anthem, Prayer and then a Moment of Silence. Then invited speakers talk of Agent Orange, this is followed by a road trip to Calverton National Cemetery where we pay our respects to SSgt John Andrew Thorburn. We then travel to the Northport VA and serve up a BBQ & live music and then enjoy the afternoon with the Veterans that now live at the VA. This is a free event, but we are looking for sponsors which allows us to purchase t-shirts which are given free to the residing Veterans and also the cost of food & beverages for the BBQ which feeds hospitalized Veterans, VA Staff and all the attendees.
