Busy week at the VAC (Veteran Activity Center) this week

Monday (tonight) hosts the Guitar players workshop for Veterans starts in group room at 1900 hrs & also the first on 4 seminar workshops for Military & Veteran Families ““Understanding the Psychological Impact of War-Zone Exposure and Coming Home” seminar stats at 1900 but doors will be open at 1830 hrs

 

Tuesday night is our Veteran Activity Peer night – open house night for all Veterans, doors open at 1830 hrs this week, chow is 1930 hrs. – every week. Sometimes we may attend movies, go bowling, or stay in house at the VAC and work on prepping for our outreach programs. Chow is supplied by members of the community who cook us home cooked meals each week

 

This Wednesday (3/9) is our open house Volunteer night – anyone in the community can stop in.

Just a few things we need to get caught up with and done at the VAC if anyone has a few hours on Wednesday night.

  1. General cleaning
  2. Address & stick labels to boxes and load them onto a truck for shipping
  3. Sorting of donations and organizing pantry area
  4. Any donations can also be dropped off on Wednesday night.
  5. Pick up flyers and solicitation letters for upcoming events
  6. Drop off auction items and baskets for upcoming events.
  7. Packing more care package boxes
  8. Flyers, raffles tickets will all be ready to be picked up
  9. We are in need of dog treats, dog toys, dog wipes, etc. We have dog handlers in the middle east requesting items for their K9 battle buddies.
  10. No children please, also if anyone wants to bring any snacks down please do so

 

Thursday night we host Recovery in the Trenches – Support group for Veterans coping with addictions. – Doors open at 7pm.

 

Any evening the VAC is open for a program, Veterans can count on the food and toiletries pantries being available.

Frank Bania of BOTGNY will be at the VAC Mon, Tues & Wed evening from 6:30pm till 9pm (every Tuesday)

David Parker of BOTGNY will be at the VAC on Thursday evenings from 7pm till 8:30 pm (every Thursday)

A female Veteran peer group will be starting on Monday nights in the next few weeks.

Every other Sunday we host 3 dog training groups, Therapy, Reactive and Puppy. This is made possible by a wonderful organization called “Unchained New York” who are providing free training to Veterans through our programs. For more info on UCNY check out their website www.unchainednewyork.org . We call this program Paws on the Ground NY

 

Upcoming events!

Sunday March 20th at the Emporium 3-8PM – fundraiser to raise funds to benefit Honor Flight Long Island, three great bands to include: The Grand Central, That 90’s band, and Memphis Crawl. There will be a buffet, and it’s an all ages event, adults $20, teens $10, and kids under 12 free

 

Sunday April 24th at the Main Event in Farmingdale 2-6PM – BOTGNY 5th Annual PTSD Awareness Benefit, our annual annual in memory of Robert Cafici USMC. This benefit funds the VAC. Tickets available at the door or on our website bootsonthegroundny.com

 

Every 3rd Saturday is collection day at the VAC, to fill our pantries and the pantry at other veteran locations. Drop off time is 10-3 pm, and we are in need of the following:

  1. Food, canned, boxed, frozen
  2. Food store gift cards
  3. Toiletries and personal care items
  4. New packages of socks, sweats, undergarments (male and female)
  5. Supplies to ship to our Troops overseas
  6. K9 supplies – for dogs in our therapy dog programs as well as to ship to dog handlers serving in our military overseas (food, snacks, toys, collars, leashes, etc)

 

We are temporarily suspending out furniture pick up program for the month of March as we restructure the program, look for alternative means of storage and await referrals from VA caseworkers.
