BOTGNY – update

Nov 14, 16 BOTGNY – update

We’ve had a busy few weeks over at Boots on the Ground NY

Veterans are moving into housing more often presently, so assistance requests are up. We are in the middle of Operation Turkey Droop 2016 and have collected over 160 turkeys so far and 1000’s of pounds of food, and Christmas program and Pack-Out event planning are all beginning.

Our Tuesday night veteran peer night has been seeing new faces. Over the past month we have had bowling outings, and even an evening at the Adventure Park, spending a night in the trees testing endurance as well as embracing camaraderie. We also had a movie night. The idea behind the Tuesday night veteran only evenings, is to keep veterans connected with each other, giving the opportunity to speak freely of things that maybe a civilian wouldn’t understand. We’ll be having another bowling night at the end of the month. This week’s Tuesday group will be delivering 48 turkeys and groceries to another nearby Veteran community. The food and toiletry food pantries are always available to Veterans on Tuesday, and there is even a dog food pantry. Tuesday night is open to all Veterans, doors are usually open by at least 1830 hrs, there’s always dinner and refreshment available. Community members drop off homecooked meals for the Veterans to enjoy, if you’re interested in supplying dinner please reach out to us.

This past weekend was Veterans Day Friday, a few of the veteran volunteers got together and delivered 60 turkeys and groceries to Liberty Village in Amityville which is entirely housed by veterans who needed a hand along the way recently, then the group spent the rest of the day picking up furniture donations pledged for our Veteran support program. Saturday was spent colleting another 80 frozen turkeys and over 5000 pounds of food during our weekend collection. Saturday evening, we were honored to be guests at the Southold American legions annual dinner dance, where they presented us a very generous check of $6,000 for us to continue our programs in assisting veterans. We are so thankful for this donation that comes from an organization of Veterans. Sunday morning the team met back up again and delivered over 2000 pounds of food and supplies to the Homeless Shelter at the Northport VA hospital, while our second team furnished a complete 2-bedroom house for a Veteran and his family who just recently secure housing. This is a typical weekend for the team members & Volunteers at Boots on the Ground NY, always putting their free time out to assist a Brother or Sister Veteran.

This year we agreed to supply almost 400 turkeys, we’ve collected 164 so far. The turkeys and groceries we are collecting and distributing are going to Veterans that are basically in need. These are Veterans we have worked with this year, as well as veterans living in government assisted program housing, hospitalized veterans, and active duty military members. We are still collecting this Wednesday night, Saturday day and into next week. Please support this food drive, not only does it put food on the table on Thanksgiving, but also lets them know that their community appreciated their service.

We are suppling toys & gifts again this year to families of military and veterans that wouldn’t be able to afford Christmas shopping. In previous years, we have always helped over 100 children every Christmas. One year we even assisted over 300. Since we started the Christmas drives, it’s probably easy to say we have helped 1000 Children. We’ve done Secret Santa’s, adopting families, Holiday parties, we started changing that up last year, now we collect at the VAC, and right before the holidays we open the building up for Veterans to walk in and “shop” for items their kids might like, it makes this more personal for the Veterans / Military to pick things their kids might like, lets then take them home and wrap them, plus they can also pick up food and supplies for the house. We also send huge boxes of toys to an active duty military unit, and we provide toys for Veterans at local homeless shelters so they can provide gifts for their kids. We also still support a private holiday party for Veterans that recently transitioned from homeless status to housing and we try to walk in with as many toys as we can.

The ripple that your toy donations create, are unspeakable to put into words.   Please bring new unwrapped toys for boys and girls between the ages of 1 -16 New clothing / jackets also needed, as well as gift cards. Plus, gift wrap. Gift bags, etc.

Collection days and times are as follows

Wednesday November 16th 6pm till 9pm

Saturday November 19th 10am-3pm

Saturday November 26th 11am – 2pm

Wednesday November 30th 6pm – 9pm

Wednesday December 7th 6pm till 9pm.

Saturday December 10th 9am – 4pm (this is also the date of our annual Christmas breakfast.)

Saturday December 17th 10am – 3pm

You can also mail us gift cards to PO Box 675 Bellport NY, or of you would like to make financial donation for this, please use   After our 4-week drive is over we set the VAC up like a toy / gift store and military service members and veterans can come in on a closed-door night and choose toys for their children and pick up food and household supplies.  Please consider doing a toy drive for us.

Thank you. The VAC (Veteran Activity Center) is located at 2184 Pond Road, Ronkonkoma NY 11779

For our annual Christmas event, we will be hosting a Breakfast donation/collection drop off on Saturday December 10th, from 0900-1500 hrs.

For a few years, we would use FD halls and posts for big breakfast events, charge door donations, it was a lot of work and people just don’t have much time or money around the holidays to spend out of their family. So, last year we started with a causal drop off event at the VAC, the VAC is the Home to Boots on the Ground NY family, so why not again just be Home for the Holidays?

We’ll have your basic continental type breakfast going on all morning (bagels, meats, eggs, oatmeal, cereal, juice, COFFEE, etc). (if anyone would like to make anything or trays of any food that can be put out for lunch please feel free to do so,)

We are looking for the following to be dropped off….

  1. Items for hospitalized Veterans, such as socks, t-shirts, sweatpants and sweatshirts, knit hats, etc
  2. Food pantry items, all boxed, canned or frozen foods
  3. unwrapped toys for kids, we don’t have a count yet on how many families we be assisting parents with supplying Christmas Cheer this year. These children belong to veteran and active duty military families. We could also use new clothing for kids of all sizes, winter jackets, etc.
  4. Care package items for Troops overseas.

Last year following this collection event, we had Veteran & Military families that needed assistance come in one evening and pick up what they needed to have a proper family Christmas. We also sent 100’s of pounds of toys to local active duty serving Troops to help them provide a nice Christmas for their kids. And then right before the Christmas Holiday we worked alongside caseworkers providing a holiday Christmas party for Veterans in the Hud Vash Program.

We will have live music at the VAC as well as brunch available from 10 AM – 3 PM and the VAC will be open till at least 4 pm for you to drop off donations.

If anyone would like to make a tray of food, bake cookies or muffins, please do so, we will have a buffet type meal available all day.

This is a free event, but donations are always accepted and needed for us to continue the mission.

Unable to attend but still want to make a donation?

In late October, we had our 3rd annual Sport and clay shoot. Professionals from the construction field in NYC got together and hosted the 3rd Annual BOTGNY Sport Shoot. They also invited 5 Veterans from Boots on the Ground NY, to be part of their event and welcomed us into their circle of friendship. The event is now hosted yearly at the Catskill Pheasantry located outside of Long Eddy NY.

This year the event this year raised over $13,000.00 (not bad for sport shoot weekend of 20 friends who gathered and dug deep into their pockets. Upon arriving at the cabins this year we found out that one of the handlers at the Peasantry, who is also a 10th Mountain Iraq War Veteran son, who’s only 6 years old, was diagnosed with a terminal disease and needed a wheelchair that the family’s insurance refused to cover. The 50/50 was donated to this Veteran along with a check from BOTGNY providing the Veteran with over $4,300.00 towards the purchase of the wheelchair.

This is what we do, this is what that event is about, assisting Veterans that need the help. We were able to meet his Son this weekend and once again our hearts were touched in a way that can’t be put into words. The remaining funds from this weekend will be used for sending care packages to the Troops serving in multiple ongoing War front, because of this event over 1000 Troops will receive a care package from Boots on the Ground NY.

That’s a huge ripple effect from a weekend gathering of friends. I would like to personally THANK: Catskill Pheasanty, Star-Lo Electric, Bodak-Cameron Engineering, EJ York, Signature Construction, Milrose Consulting, Alternative Energy Solutions, Service Works Inc, Icor Solutions.

Lazslo, Dennis, Dale, Joe, Jeremy – Thank you so much for putting this all together, I couldn’t say thank you enough.

The first weekend in December we are taking 15 World War 2 Veterans “Our Greatest Generation” to the WW2 Museum in New Orleans. This is an overnight trip and will be completely free to our Veterans attending. We are still in need of financial donations for this trip, please visit the link:

We will have some new programs coming up in the New Year, so please subscribe to our website and our Facebook to keep in the know.

We are currently looking for yard space in the Ronkonkoma/Bohemia area. Boots on the Ground NY has 2 support trailer and a support van, that cannot be housed at the VAC location as the landlord states we are in violation of town of Islip codes by keeping them in the parking lot, so we are looking for somewhere secure and accessible to park them. If you can help us, please reach out.

Please consider us when donating locally. BOTGNY is 100 % Volunteer, no one gets paid. We are a tax exempt 501c10 Veterans organization and your donations are completely tax deductible. We just recently had an independent audit completed for 2015 and it was found that 95.5% of donations goes towards veterans and programs, the 4.5% went to things such as the accountant, and the website.

To make a secure online donation please visit or you can mail checks made payable to Boots on the Ground NY to PO BOX 675 Bellport NY 11713.

Just in the past few weeks, we have purchased over ten mattress bed sets, assisted with car repairs, home heating bills, medical bills and security funds for housing. We have also been paying for security guard training and certification for Veterans and just recently helped a veteran to provide a specialty wheelchair for his son.

Thank you for your support!
